Somalia has been suffering in the atrocity of the civil war
since 1990 in which thousands of human lives lost, properties
destroyed and national state institution entirely ruined.
Among devastated institutions includes hospitals, private
and public clinics, and educational institutions such as faculty
of Medicine, Institute of nursing and health personal training
institutes. Furthermore, during this brutal war, many medical
personnel had been murdered or deceased, migrated, displaced
or retired as the rest of the health professionals need re-training.
This awful situation caused severe break down of the health
services delivery to the people, in particular the most vulnerable
groups.
During this prolonged civil war era, acute need for trained
health personnel was felt in all regions of the country. UN
agencies, local and international NGO's had been trying to
offer short training programs in their specific areas of interest
and establishing health personnel training Institute was not
among their priorities. How ever, this was far short to cover
the real need for qualified nurses in Somalia.
MOGADISHU University, a private non-profit institution of
higher education established in Mogadishu in 1996 has been
planning to deal with the severe need for sustainable community
owned health institution in Mogadishu. And institute of nursing
under the auspices of the University has seen the light in
the academic year 2000/2001. In the academic year 2004/2005,
High Institute of Nursing was transformed into Faculty of
Nursing.
Faculty Objectives:
- To produce highly qualified nurses capable in delivering
appropriate health services to the community and compliant
to the ethics of the profession.
- To upgrade the skills and knowledge of the health professionals
by conducting varieties of short term training programs,
refresher courses, workshops and seminars.
- To promote among the students the culture of peace and
self-reliance, respect for human rights and the good values
of the society.
Special features:
- It is a private non-profit institution under the auspices
of Mogadishu University.
- English is the language of instruction.
- Offers Bsc in General Nursing in four years program.
- Each academic year consists of two semesters (24 weeks/semester).
- Students will be given the opportunity to learn Arabic
language during the course.
Admission requirements:
- Original secondary school certificate (12 years) priority
will be given those with high marks in scientific subjects.
- Birth certificate.
- Certificate of good conduct.
- File with application letter.
- Pass written exam and oral interview.
- Pass English language written & oral entrance examination
at least with 40% marks.
- Not more than 25 years of age.
- Pregnancy is not allowed during the whole course of the
Institute.
Tests & Exams:
- The student should pass the examinations by 60% for each
subject.
- Three exams will take place in each semester as follows:
a) First exam: in two months-correction being 20marks /
20.
b) Second exam: in four months-correction being 20 marks
/20.
c) Third exams: at the end of the semester-correction being
60 marks/ 60.
- If the student fails in four subjects or more he/she will
repeat the semester.
- If he/she fails in three or less subjects/ semester will
be given one more chance to be re-examined.
- The students will be eligible to the next semester only
after passing all subjects, no carry over of subject is
allowed.
Enrolment and Fees:
- Number of students in the first year are 99.
- Expected enrolment in each year is 40 students.
Registration fee is equal to $10.
- Academic fees is $400 per year.
Faculty Library:
Special library for the Faculty of Nursing was established
in September 2000, which has a lot of titles and publications.
Most of these books are textbooks for students and references
for tutors.

Annual vacation:
The Faculty annual leave will be one-month vacation per year.
Uniform:
- Male Nurses-white trousers and white shirts.
- Female Nurses-white gown, white shirts and white head
cover.
