Conference in Cairo

The one-week conference was on
Groundwater Governance and Management in the Arid and Semi-Arid
Climates held in Cairo, Egypt between 2-8 April 2005. It was
a knowledge sharing and capacity building workshop in the
integrated water resources management. It provided the participants
the opportunities to share a case-history and country practices-based
knowledge and exchange of experiences from those countries
and regions they represented. The conference was organized
by the World Metrological Organization (WMO), The International
Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) and others. The Egyptian Minister
for Water & Irrigation, Mr. Mohamoud Abu Zeid, whose ministry
hosted the conference in Cairo, gave a worm welcome to the
participants.
The Somali Center for Water and Environment (SCWE) is a non-profit
Somali institution that focuses its efforts on water and environmental
issues in Somalia. It is based in Sweden and developed close
research link and working collaboration with Mogadishu University
(MU) in Somalia. The SCWE program coordinator, Hussein M.
Iman attended that conference.
The conference provided a platform for opening a dialogue
for groundwater management to provide a practical pathway
for addressing the recurrent chronic problems, optimize and
reconsider the iwrm approaches for groundwater in the arid
and semi-arid settings.
Over 70 expert participants attended this conference invited
from over 50 countries with arid and semi-arid climate settings
where groundwater is a critical resource. The participants
